There was a fantastic article on The Toast this week by Denece Mohammed, discussing the differences between what she calls "Trini English and Proper English". It's a great read, and although her experiences and background are very different to mine, I was fascinated at how some of it resonated with my experiences of dialect and language. "When I moved back home, the difference was stark...Here there was no benefit in this new accent, my new words, my slower tongue. I was home and people still asked where I was from. To relearn the language was to speak in a way I never had before I left. I overcompensated with slang and dialect."

A new mug from the webstore of the magnificent spoken word poet, hip hop artist, podcast hero and beard wearer Scroobius Pip. If you've never come across his work, I highly recommend checking him out on YouTube, or getting hold of his podcasts.
