As always, it's hard to describe how exciting and joyful and tiring and encouraging the Scottish Episcopal Church annual youth week is to be a part of, but this picture illustrates just a tiny sliver of the creativity our young people inspire us with every year. Presented with minimal resources and a plain wooden doll, each house group invented a completely different character complete with complex back story and distinct style, in under an hour.

Yesterday I took a trip to the London Museum of Water & Steam (formerly known as Kew Bridge Steam Museum). It's one of my absolute favourite museums in London, full of large steam powered pumps and fascinating facts about the water systems in London. It also has a beautiful garden, although it was so hot we didn't manage to enjoy it for very long. In the grounds there is a tiny steam engine, which was used to transport coal when the site was used as a water pumping station. Any opportunity to travel by steam always reminds me of From a Railway Carriage by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was one of the first poems I ever memorised, mainly because it was on a poster outside my English classroom. "Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches; And charging along like troops in a battle, All through the meadows the horses and cattle" |
